Richard Duardo (1952-2014) is a key figure in the post war Chicano art movement in Los Angeles. A master screenprinter who studied at UCLA, Duardos boisterous appropriations of Warhol-style imagery garnered him the moniker Warhol of the West.
In the 1970s, Duardo co-founded Centro de Arte Publico, a highly political arts collective. In 1980, he established his own fine art print studio, Hecho en Aztlan and its later offshoots, Aztlan Multiples, Multiples Fine Art, Future Perfect, Art & Commerce, and his last studio, Modern Multiples, Inc. The archives of these studios are collected by the University of California, Santa Barbara's Department of Chicano Studies.
Duardo has worked with David Hockeny, Shepherd Faiurey, Keith Haring and Banksy, published over 300 artists' work. He has had museum shows in Tokyo and Gifu, Japan, New York and Los Angeles. His work was selected for a National Endowment for the Arts travelling exhibitiont. In 1988, Duardo received The California Arts Commission for The Artist of the Year Award. His work is represented in notable collections including The Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
