Jemma Rowe's artistic journey began with a strong foundation in graphic design and fine art, honing her skills at London College of Communication and Kingston University. This dual background has significantly influenced her current practice. After a successful career in the design industry, she transitioned to a full-time artist in 2019.
Rowe's latest series of paintings delves into the visual traces of human absence in uninhabitable spaces. Her works depict houses as intricate, skeletal structures, reminiscent of buildings under construction. However, these are not mere frameworks; they bear the marks of human habitation through subtle embellishments.
The absence of human figures in these large-scale compositions creates a sense of eerie uncertainty. Like abandoned hotels in a Ballard story, these structures both intrigue and perplex, defying conventional notions of accessibility while adhering to the rules of perspective.
Rowe's paintings are strikingly beautiful and uplifting. They offer a sense of escape and a reminder that even in the face of emptiness, light and joy can be found.
