Natacha Bissare

The work of Natacha Bissare explores the human condition and its multi-layered wonders and contradictions. Her background in dance informs both visual and emotional observations of the human form, and movement plays a large part of it, both in the process and result of finished pieces.

With an earlier background as a dance artist, her fine art processes involve similar play and exploration of new techniques and materials, often determined by the nature of the observations she makes about herself. They become the inspiration for the work. One of her favourite collections called “Human Nature” was achieved using inks and hand-picked twigs from her garden to create linear markings on paper: the inspiration for this collection being the paradox of the sense of comfort and stimulation she gets from living and working in a city while always yearning to be physically connected with nature.

Watercolours, inks, and fluid acrylics feature mostly in her works due to their intrinsic flowing qualities which lend themselves to more naturalistic shapes and movement. Playing with fluid materials allows ‘conversations’ with her work, Bissare responds to them as much as to her own impulses and ideas. Often using numerous layers when working on canvas depicts the multi-faceted qualities of the subjects Natacha chooses. The final layers then include finer lines and markings which become essential to the pieces and are almost ceremonial to Natacha in illustrating how everything we experience as humans is connected, whether we are conscious of it or not.
